Rubber Adhesives

Rubber adhesives are very commonly used for personal projects and in various types of industry. They generally work without the use of solvents so they are less harmful for the environment. Natural rubber adhesives are commonly used to bond rubber, plastic, paper, fabric, wood, and glass. Polyurethane is the most common type of synthetic rubber adhesive. It is very flexible and the strongest type of rubber adhesive. It also bonds very quickly so you don’t have to wait long for it to fully cure.

Silicone rubber is commonly used in construction because it works well in various temperatures. It is often used for glazing. Yet one problem with silicone rubber adhesive is it isn’t as strong as other types. Construction workers have to be very selective where they use it. Since they work well with temperature changes and humidity, silicone rubber adhesives are commonly used in bathrooms.

It is important to allow materials bonded with rubber adhesives to dry and cure for at least 24 hours before any weight is placed on them. Otherwise it can result in the bond not being as strong as it should be. As the ingredients evaporate into the air the rubber adhesive will become more durable. If you don’t allow it to completely dry though the bond can have air pockets making it not bond in those areas.

It is very important to use the right type of rubber adhesive for the materials you plan to bond together. There are various strengths of rubber adhesives available as well. Each type of rubber adhesive comes with information that tells you want it is recommended to be used for. Since most rubber adhesives are very affordable it is worth it to invest in several of them made for specific types of projects.
